Mayor's Minute

Is it, “Sum-mer” or “Some-more?”  I can’t get enough of these sunny days!

Landmark Community Meeting

If you have questions, concerns, comments, or just want to know a little bit more about the Masonic Home/Landmark; the history, the process, the current status, etc., please join us at the Beach Park this Thursday, August 21 at 6pm.

Marina Steps

After all this time, the Marina Steps are not yet a sure thing.  The City Council will be hearing a detailed report about options during our September 4 meeting.  If you have strong feelings about this project, please share them with us!  You can write to the Council at [email protected] or even better, join us at the meeting!
Where: City Hall, 6 pm.

Q & A
Why is the City tearing down the Marina docks?

The docks and slips are deteriorating and need to be replaced.  This will likely be about a 20-year process and the resulting moorage will more closely match trending demand for boat sizes, slips, and moorage fees.  This project is being paid for by Marina tenants. In the meantime, covered moorage will continue to be available.

Mayor’s Meetings & Events

Arya Samaj chooses Des Moines
It was an honor to attend and welcome the International Arya Samaj Conference as they celebrated 150 years with great performances and fantastic cuisine.

National Night Out
National Night Out; the best pot luck picnic of the year! What a fantastic evening for greeting and supporting neighbors all over the community - thank you all for the food, fun, and laughter!

Music in the Park
Music in the Park is growing to be one of the best-attended events in the City with more than a thousand people eating, dancing and laughing this last week!  We have one more concert for the season, this Wednesday, August 20, at 7 pm.  Come on out and hear Lively Colours!

Citizen’s Advisory Board
I am so appreciating our new Citizen's Advisory Board! An advisory body that encompasses our Arts Commission, Senior Citizens' Advisory, and Human Services Advisory, these folks do a lot to support our community. If you happen to see any of them around town, give them a pat on the back!  We still have openings for those who live in the Pacific Ridge area of town - if you happen to know anyone interested, have them call the City: 206-878-4595.

Cambodian Festival
It was an honor to welcome hundreds of our Cambodian neighbors as they gathered for their annual festival - and an authentic wedding! So gracious and kind, offering friendship (and terrific cuisine!), they are in need of support for their war-torn homeland.

Fusion Gala
What a grand evening for a gala! With the goal of making homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring, and operating Poverty Bay Coffee Company and Fusion Decor Boutique in support of their vision, Fusion helps over 250 families per year find housing and support for a stable future.

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene
“Working to keep us from moving backwards is our prime focus . . . and telling people’s stories is essential.” - Congresswoman Suzan DelBene
It was an honor to host an SCA luncheon gathering in order to hear from this hard-working representative. Thank you, Suzan!

Congressman Adam Smith
“Representative democracy will not be perfect but it is what we have and we need to work to build coalition.” - Adam Smith
It was an honor to represent Des Moines as the host City for the annual “Taste of the Ninth,” featuring our own Adam Smith. It was a delight to see electeds gathered from all over the County to support he work he is doing in “the other Washington.”

King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay
I so much appreciated the opportunity to chat about possibilities for resource and partnerships with King County Councilmember (and Executive candidate) Girmay Zahilay, who is a great South County advocate.

Workforce Discovery Lab
Thirty high school students
From four cities
Gathered for week
In the middle of their summer
To learn and be inspired
By industry, and small business leaders
In our community.
Some of their takeaways:
“If you don’t give up, every ‘no’ gets you closer to a ‘yes’ .”
“Success is continuing to get up every time you fall.”
“Those amazing, successful women looked just like me.”
“If they can do it, I can do it.”
“If you keep your mouth shut, you’ll never get fed.”
HUGE thanks to the Southside Chamber for initiating this fabulous #WorkforceDiscoveryLab

Farmer’s Market
Every Saturday, a highlight of my week is visiting with folks from all over the City and region as they come to enjoy food, fare, the view, the weather . . . I could go on and on.  If you see me there, stop and say “Hi!”  You’ll probably get a hug. 😊

Sips and Chicks
In a beautiful effort to bring local women together to just visit and connect, community member Francis Vanderyacht is inviting women to gather under the moniker; “Sips and Chicks.”  It was a delight to attend and chat with these amazing women.  Keep an eye out on the community pages for further events!

Meeting with the Community
I love meeting with community members, especially volunteer spirits like these two women (Ruth Easterling and KC Engle), to chat about partnerships, leadership opportunities, education, and more! Reach out any time if you would like to visit!
