Happy Independence week!
I hope you all enjoy the chance to celebrate our freedoms!
Top Stories
In our annual 4th of July celebration, the City will be hosting music and an assortment of food trucks down at the Marina, with a drone show over the water starting at 10:20pm. Hope to see you there!
Cruising Ordinance
The City Council will be considering a cruising ordinance in the coming few weeks. This will be another safety tool our officers can use, but according to State law, pursuits would not be allowed for violators if they flee.
Citizens Advisory Board
The Council has officially appointed our reorganized Citizens Advisory Board which will oversee Arts, Human Services, and Senior Services. We are excited for this new work and there are still a few vacancies for: the Marina District, North Central District, and Pacific Ridge neighborhoods. If you are interested in dynamic services to our City, check it out

Q & A
When will the slide be open at the Fieldhouse?
It’s OPEN! Go check it out!!
What do I do if I recognize road and street issues?
Go to the City website and make a report here
This is the best way to get into our system and receive updates about attention to the problem. And, the City is currently reviewing neighborhood road issues in particular.
Meetings & Events
Incorporated on June 17, 1959 as an official city in King County, Des Moines has grown to approximately 33,000 people and continues to thrive. Happy Birthday, Waterland!
Maritime High School graduated its first class of Seniors last week. I am so proud of them and of the opportunities the Highline School District is offering our community. Congrats, grads!
Parkside’s Annual Hero Day was delightful! I was especially proud to visit Miss Jenna’s class and find a lovely young lady who aspires to be a Mayor one day!
The annual Men In Black Birthday Bash was a great success, and terrific opportunity to gather friends not only from Des Moines, but around the region. The signature look is supposed to be serious, but I couldn’t help myself!
This week at PSRC it was a privilege to bring our voice to a regional table! We reviewed the regional transportation plan; a process that puts regional projects on a list for federal grants. A few Des Moines projects were included, and I’m hoping to get a few more added by next year.
As SCA President, I have the honor of joining with our leadership team for a monthly meeting with the KC Executive’s office in order to advocate for the desires of cities. This week we discussed coming levies, possible taxes, public safety dollars, and World Cup 2026.
