A Full Weekend of Summer Fun This Weekend!

NOTICE OF TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE!!

Get ready for one of the biggest weekends of the summer! From the Waterland Festival and Parade to live music, family activities, classic cars, beautiful wooden boats, and a bustling marina, there's something happening around every corner in Des Moines.

The fun begins Friday with the Waterland Children's Festival at Field House Park, followed by the Waterland Parade on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. along Marine View Drive South. Be sure to stick around afterward for the first-ever Downtown Block Party, where you'll enjoy live music, food, a beer garden, family activities, and a festive atmosphere until 10:00 p.m.

Planning to attend? Please note that temporary road closures will be in effect on Saturday, July 18.
Marine View Drive South will be closed between South 216th Street and South 226th Street from 6:00–7:00 p.m. for the Waterland Parade. Following the parade, Marine View Drive South between South 223rd Street and South 225th Street will remain closed from 7:00–10:00 p.m. for the Downtown Block Party. Signed detours will be in place, so motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

On Sunday, head to the Des Moines Marina for the popular Wheels & Keels Car & Wooden Boat Show. You'll find an incredible display of classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars, customs, and beautifully restored wooden boats. The marina will also be especially busy with the Argosy Cruise and opening day of recreational crabbing, making it one of the busiest days of the summer on the waterfront.

If you're planning to visit the marina on Sunday, July 19, please allow extra time and be prepared for very limited parking. Consider carpooling, arriving early, or using nearby parking areas if available.

Whether you're enjoying the parade, dancing at the block party, relaxing at the Summer Concert Series, admiring classic cars and wooden boats, or spending the day on the water, this weekend is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate everything that makes Des Moines such a special community.

We look forward to seeing you out enjoying all the fun during Waterland Weekend!

NEW!!  Easier Access to Council Agendas and Minutes

The City is in the process of redesigning its current website to improve accessibility, navigation, and the overall user experience.

As part of this update, a new online portal launching in 2026 will be the go-to place for all City Council and Committee meeting agendas and minutes.

This new portal will make it simple to find meeting information and stay up to date. A link to the portal is included below so you can easily access these materials.

Once the website update is complete, all Council-related information will be consolidated and accessible in a single location. In the interim, Council actions prior to 2026 remain available under the City Council tab on the City’s current website, which also includes the Search function when searching for items.
